    Background: POJUCA, SALVADOR, BRAZIL

At least 42 people have died and hundreds were injured as a result of a train derailment in Northeastern Brazil on the night of September 1. The train was derailed in the small town of Pojuca and 200,000 litres (22,000 gallons) of petrol and diesel were spilt. Hundreds of local people carried the fuel away in tins. They were caught by a blast 12 hours later. Reuters quoted a State Public Security Secretariat spokesman as blaming either a match or a cigarette for the explosions. Two more explosions followed, hurling people and small houses within 50 metres (yards) up into the air. Fire quickly spread through the poor district of Piedad where most of the fuel had been taken. The official said the death toll could rise sharply as most of the injured were badly burned. They were taken to hospital in Salvador, some 60 kilometres (40 miles) away. Eyewitnesses reported seeing people covered in flames hurling themselves into a nearby lake from which firemen had already recovered some bodies. Local politicians have criticised the state oil company, Petrobras, owner of the three fuel wagons, and the railway authorities for not evacuating the area after the accident.
