Background: An estimated crowd of 7,000 gathered in the rain at Tokyo's Hibiya Part on Friday evening (9 April) to protest against the way Prime Minister Miki's government is handling the Locked pay-off investigation.

The rally, sponsored by the opposition parties -- the Japan Communist Parry (JCP), Japan Socialist Party (JSP) and Komeito (the Clean Government Party) -- began with speech from various party leaders.

Under heavy police security, the demonstrators then marched through Tokyo's streets to the Prime Minister's residence and the Diet (Parliament) building.

The Japanese Government has sent two officials to Washington to being all the Lokheed data, currently held by the United States Security Exchange Commission, back to Japan. Prime Minister Miki's acceptance of the U.S. Government's conditions on releasing this data has touched off strong opposition party criticism. The U.S. Government has said that none of the Lockheed material, including any names of Japanese Government officials who may have received bribes, would be released to the public until after legal investigation had been completed.

The opposition parties, in voicing their protest, have so far boycotted all parliamentary proceedings, including the debate on the 1976 Budget.
