Background: On the anniversary of Greek Independence from the Turks, Greek Cypriot students studying at Athens, renewed their oath of allegiance to 'fight with all their heart and soul for the liberation of Cyprus from the British occupation'.
In procession, led by their President, the students paid homage at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior. While gathered round the shrine the Cypriots sang EOKA liberation songs, and their leaders laid wreaths on the tomb. The Bishop of Kyrenia Kyprianos was there and he too put a wreath on the Unknown Warrior's tomb.
After this short ceremony the students marched through the streets, carrying banners and flags, watched by a sympathetic crowd.
The President of the Cypriot Students was recently arrested with two other students on a charge of planting bombs in the United States Information Service Library, and at the American Airforce Base in Hellinikon.
At present Cyprus is in a state of passive resistance. Village officials have been forced, by EOKA terrorists, to resign their posts as government administrators. This has upset the smooth running of various government services, for now there are insufficient officers, either Cypriot or non-Cypriot, to carry on the duties.
