Background: FIFTY-ONE TRISTAN DA CUNHA ISLANDERS SAILED FROM TILBURY, ESSEX, TODAY (SUNDAY) IN THE LINER AMAZON, 20,368 TONS, FOR THEIR HOME IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC WHICH THEY LEFT 15 MONTHS AGO BECAUSE OF AN ERUPTING VOLCANO. NEARLY TWO HUNDRED MORE ISLANDERS WILL BE FOLLOWING ON A SPECIALLY CHARTERED SHIP AT THE END OF THE YEAR. MR. NIGEL FISHER, UNDER-SECRETARY FOR THE COLONIES, WAS AT TILBURY TO BID FAREWELL TO THE ADVANCED PARTY. LAST DECEMBER, A SECRET BALLOT ORGANISED BY THE COLONIAL OFFICE, WAS HELD AT THEIR HOME IN CALSHOT, NEAR SOUTHAMPTON, TO FIND OUT HOW MANY OF THE ISLANDERS WISHED TO RETURN TO TRISTAN. ALL OF THE ISLANDERS OVER 21 YEARS OF AGE VOTED. ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-EIGHT INDICATED THEIR DESIRE TO RETURN TO TRISTAN, AND ONLY FIVE VOTED TO STAY IN BRITAIN. MR. WILLI REPETTO, CHIEF OF THE ISLANDERS, SAID BEFORE HE LEFT, THAT HE WOULD BE ONLY TOO HAPPY TO GET BACK TO THE SIMPLE LIFE, LIVING ON THE POTATOES THEY GREW, THE FISH THEY CAUGHT, AND IN THE WOODEN HOUSES THEY BUILT. THERE WERE MOVING SCENES AS THE LINER PREPARED TO LEAVE. ALTHOUGH, LIKE WILLI REPETTO, ALL THE ISLANDERS WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO RETURNING HOME, THERE WERE TEARS WHEN THE TIME CAME TO SAY GOOD BYE TO FRIENDS MADE DURING THEIR STAY IN BRITAIN.
