    Ernst Vettori of Austria jumped 116 metres and 115 metres and 115 metres to set a hell and win the first leg of the tradition four-hill international ski jumping tournament in Oberstdorf on December 30. Vettori, who collected 235.4 points for the two jumps from the 90-metre hill, beat Canadian Horst Bulau's previous best on both leaps. Finland's Olympic champion Matty Nykaenen, regaining his form after a knee operation, finished in second place with jumps of 114.5 and 114 metres and 223.9 points. The result moves Vettori into second place in the world cup standings after five competitions with 82 points, behind countryman Andreas Felder with 115. Felder won the first four events of the season, but could only manage third place in Oberstdorf with jumps of 113.5 and 110 metres. Jans Weissflog, the Olympic champion from East Germany finished fourth with jumps of 114 and 111.5 metres. The four-hill tour continues on January in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany, before moving on to Austria.
