Background: Just how the population of a mighty nation like the United States fluctuates from minute to minute was shown by a recent table of statistics issued by the US Department of Commerce.
Their figures showed that:-
A. A new baby is born every seven and a half seconds.
B. An American citizen dies every 20 seconds.
C. A new immigrant arrives in the United States every one and a half minutes.
D. Every 20 minutes sees the departure overseas of an American immigrant .
E. That the population of America stood at 175,000,000 on the morning of October 16 - an increase of 10,000,000 since May of 1955 and of 5,000,000 since February of 1957.
Just why are these figures essential to the United States administration? With charts and diagrams showing the minute-by-minute changes in the population figure, the authorities can estimate the correct distribution of Federal Funds to the various States.
Like any other major nation the United States carries out a regular country-wide census - but the running tables are always available for the staticians faced with the world-wide problem of a growing population.
