Background: Nice's week-long centenary celebrations, marking the final union of the city and county with France in 1860, reached their climax June 11/12, with a precession of flower-bedecked floats from all French provinces, a grand parade by troops in modern and historical uniforms, and magnificent fireworks display.

Throughout the celebrations there was a note of justified pride in the prosperity of the city, and a feeling of gratitude for the reunion with France which made possible the rise of this Mediterranean resort from poverty and the ravages of warring parties.

After a long and fateful history - which saw Nice in alliance with Pisa, then under the protection of Savoy, pillaged by Barbarossa in 1543, hit by pestilence in the later 16th century, variously conquered by France and Sardinia - a treaty concluded in 1860 between the Sardinian king and Napoleon III finally transferred the county of Nice to France.
