NUSEIBEH: "If the Israeli occupation authorities believe that by defiance and non-compliance with United Nations resolutions they could undermine the credibility of the Committee's findings, they must have miscalculated; for no cover-up can ever succeed to place the lid on the truth from other sources including, and this is the irony of it, Israeli sources which by no stretch of the imagination can be accused of being anti-Israeli."

RAHMAN: "It has been the policy of the Zionist movement since its inception to occupy Palestine and settle its land. This policy continues to be the official policy of the Zionist Movement as well as its state instrument, Israel. Information is provided on Page 5A in Section 6 when Menachem Begin, the Prime Minister of the Zionist state of Israel, is quoted as saying 'The Jewish people's right....." and I quote, "the Jewish people's right to settle in all parts of the land of Israel is inalienable. This right has been carried on in the past and will be in the future.' Unquote. No further evidence is needed Mr. Chairman, to show Israeli expansionist policies, and its violations, particularly, but not exclusively, General Assembly resolution 32,36, and the Charter of the United Nations that so clearly states the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force."

Background: A United Nations report published on Monday (20 November) is highly critical of the behaviour of Israeli authorities in the territories occupied since the 1967 War. The report accuses the Israelis of abusing prisoners and depriving Arab civilians of their human rights. A three-member panel of diplomats, who prepared the report, expressed concern over the situation and called on the General Assembly to end the Israeli occupation.

SYNOPSIS: In the debate on the report, they were supported by Jordan's representative, Dr. Hazem Nuseibeh. He accused Israel of attempting a cover-up.

Another speaker who condemned the Israeli policy was the permanent observer for the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Mr. Hasan Abdel Rahman.
