    REPORTER: "MR KENNEDY, YOUR VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA IS ATTRACTING A GOOD DEAL OF ATTENTION, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO ACHIEVE?"



    MR KENNEDY: "WELL, I'D LIKE TO LEARN AS MUCH AS I CAN ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA. I'D LIKE TO ALSO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXCHANGE VIEWS, IDEAS, WITH AS MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF GROUPS WITHIN SOUTH AFRICA AS POSSIBLE."



    REPORTER: "DO YOU EXPECT TO TALK ABOUT THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT OR APARTHEID, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT?"



    MR KENNEDY" "WELL I THINK THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED AFTER I ARRIVED SOUTH AFRICA. I'M SPEAKING, I THINK, SEVERAL TIMES. I'LL SPEAK ABOUT MY VIEWS ON VARIOUS MATTERS."



    REPORTER: "I UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR HOSTS, THE PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS' UNION, HAS BEEN BANNED UNDER THE SUPPRESSION OF COMMUNISM ACT, WOULD YOU EXPECT TO MEET HIM?"



    MR KENNEDY: "WELL I HOPE TO HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE HIM. I UNDERSTAND HE CAN'T ATTEND THE MEETINGS TO WHICH HE INVITED ME. BUT I LOOK FORWARD TO AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE HIM SOMETIMES OF OTHER."



    REPORTER: "HOW DO THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT'S OBJECTIONS VISIT - THEY BANNED YOUR FOLLOWERS, YOUR NEWSMEN, T-V MEN -"



    MR KENNEDY: "YOU CALL YOURSELF A FOLLOWER OF MINE?"



    REPORTER: " - I'D LIKE TO BE. BUT THEY SAY THAT IT MIGHT TURN INTO A PUBLICITY STUNT. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT?"



    MR KENNEDY: "WELL, WHY DO THE NEWSMEN WANT TO COME?"



    REPORTER: "THERE'S BEEN SOME TALK THAT THIS MIGHT BE PART OF ??? BUILD-UP FOR YOUR PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRATIONS?"



    MR KENNEDY: "WELL I ALWAYS FELT THAT THE PRESS WAS FREE, AND THEY COULD MAKE THEIR OWN JUDGEMENT ABOUT THOSE MATTERS."

MR IAN ROBERTSON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNION - WHICH INVITED SENATOR KENNEDY TO SOUTH AFRICA - HAS BEEN RESTRICTED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT UNDER THE SUPPRESSION OF COMMUNISM ACT. SENATOR KENNEDY DECLINED TO COMMENT ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT'S DECISION NOT TO ALLOW 40 FOREIGN JOURNALISTS TO ACCOMPANY HIM ON HIS TOUR OF THE REPUBLIC.
