Background: INTRODUCTION: The first matches in the Volvo Grand Prix Masters' tennis tournament were played at New York's Madison Square Gardens on Wednesday (14 January). Eight of the world's top players meet each other in two groups at the round robin stage. The opening night brought victories for Bjorn Borg of Sweden in the Blue Group and Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia in the Red Group.
Borg was playing Jose-Luis Clerc of Argentina, who qualified for the Masters' for the first time. And though the outcome was never in much doubt, it was not one of the Wimbledon champion's more impressive performances. Borg is a notoriously slow starter, and he was short of match practice. It is his first tournament for nearly two months.
Borg himself said that, for this reason, he played cautiously. He was content to wait for the Argentina player to make mistakes.
Borg took the first set 6-3, and is now serving for the match, 5-4 up in the second.
The 20-year old Czech, Ivan Lendl was facing the service of the vastly experienced American, Harold Solomon. But it held no terrors for him. Lendl took the first set crisply, 6-3.
Lendl is fast moving into the very top class, and look us though he is capable of posing a serious challenge to Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. His efficiency and accuracy proved decisive in the second set against Solomon. 5 - 1 to Lendl and match point.
6 - 3, 6 - 1: a most encouraging start of Ivan Lendl.
