SV... "It always gives me a great thrill to see a Battalion of the Black Watch and I Have seen today an extremely fine body of men, looking fit and very smart, and obviously extremely well trained and fit."

SCU... "The second Battalion is the Battalion I know best, has been under my command for a long time, lately they were under my command in Palestine shortly before the war and in this war they were in Palestine then they went down to Somaliland and fought there and then they fought under me in the defence of Crete, and later in the defence of Tobruk, and very greatly distinguished themselves in the sortie from Tobruk when Tobruk was relieved."

SV... I want to give you a message that our Colonel in Chief, Her Majesty the Queen gave me early this afternoon when she heard that I was coming down to see this Battalion. She asked me specially to convey to you her best wishes and to say how much she had enjoyed seeing you this summer."

SCU... "Well, I won't keep you any longer I only want to say this to you, that I like the look of you very much indeed and I am quite confident that the enemy won't when he sees you! I hope that after the years of training you will soon get an opportunity of showing your metal and I wish you the very best of good luck and I am very proud to have seen you. Good luck to you all."
