REPORTER: The Boston Garden was one stop on a seven city United States tour by the Soviet gymnasts. In international competition the Russian men have taken a back seat to the women. The men have been runners-up to the Japanese in Olympic Games since 1960. But the women have dominated Olympic competition, winning the overall title again in Munich two years ago. Even though she finished seventh in all-round performance, the star of the Munich Games and the girl who brings out the crowds in the United States tour, is Olga Korbut. Her two gold medals and one silver medal, and her spectacular performances arouse great enthusiasm for gymnastics among women the world over. One of her gold medals came in the balance beam event. Although a veteran of gymnast competition, Olga is only nineteen. This is Charles Amunson reporting.

Background: The star of the Soviet gymnastics team now touring the United States, is nineteen-year-old Olga Korbut. This diminutive young athlete first attracted public attention in the West when she appeared on television sets throughout the world during the Munich Olympic Games in 1972.
The 16 member touring team were in Chicago on Tuesday (19 November) to give their exhibition gymnastic display at the city's Boston Garden arena. It is one of seven cities in the United States they are visiting during the tour.
Most of the team members seem to have uninhibited diets while in America. When they arrived in San Francisco they ordered plates of pears, mangoes, bananas and pineapples, all of which are not available in Moscow.
Olga is also reported to have a healthy appetite, and shows a remarkable ability to eat practically anything in sight - including chips, hamburgers, and pancakes - while still keeping her weight at a trim 821b. (37.195 kilograms).
During this tour, experts have been surprised to see Olga performing difficult back flips. Earlier this year she was reported to be out of action because of back trouble, and had been advised not to perform reverse summersaults again.
Although Olga only came seventh in the over-all gymnastic competition in the 1972 Olympics, she won two gold medals and one silver in other classes. But it is not so much her past achievements that are attracting the crowds during this current tour, but her spectacular performances and sparkling personality.
