Background: Petrol bombs and CS gas flared, and rubber bullets ricocheted about the streets of Londonderry early today (Thursday) as rioting broke out in the simmering Bogside district. The troops opened fire after gangs of youths had hurled fragments of broken paving stones at them.

The trouble broke out in a district where only a few hours earlier, many of the soldiers had been quietly drinking tea in the narrow streets among groups of quietly-talking residents.

Then the stone-throwing youths charged into the area. The troops hit back with their rubber bullets aimed to hit ankles and legs. CS gas was also fired.

Two petrol bombs were hurled at an Army jeep, but caused no damage. An army officer warned the rioters through a loud-hailer that anyone seen with a petrol bomb was liable to be shot dead.

Finally leading citizens addressed the crowd and persuaded most of the people to go their homes.

The rioting came after yesterday's emotion-charged -- and illegal -- Protestant rally of Apprentice Boys had ended with comparatively little trouble. The march was staged in defiance of a Government ban on parades and marches in Northern Ireland.
