Background: There was a reshuffle of the world championship table on Saturday after the British Grand Prix Race. With Mike Hawthorn at the top with 30 points. Stirling Moss second with 23 and Peter Collins third with 14 points, it looks as if an English driver will take the crown for the first time ever this year.
Stirling Moss, favourite for the top honour of the motor racing world, missed his chance when his Vanwall packed up with engine trouble on the 26th. lap. A win in the next big race of the season, the Nurborg Ring, Germany, on August 3rd., would put Stirling well on the way to being this year's world champion driver.
It was astute driving by the two Ferrari drivers, Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn, that caused Moss to burn up his car. From start to chequer flag Collins held off all opposition. He and Hawthorn were working to a plan, Collins was pace-maker and general destroyer of opposition. When the time was right his team-mate would burst from the pack to victory, or so they hoped. When Stirling fell by the wayside the Ferrari's plan did also, and Collins swept home at an average of 102.05mph.
After a practice run of 106 mph on one lap, Stirling looked set to take one of the first three places. Prior to the big race he won the 25 miles Sports Car event in a Lister-Jaguar, at an average speed of 97.92 mph.
In spite of stopping for 30 secs. on the 42 lap of the 225 mile race, Hawthorn made up plenty of ground and finished a few seconds behind his fellow Ferrari driver Collins. Behind the Ferraris there was a constant battle between Salvadori, in a 2.2 litre Cooper, and Stuart Lewis-Evans driving a Vanwall. At the line Salvadori's Cooper beat the Vanwall by several yards for third place.
