Background: KHORASSAN PROVINCE IN IRAN IS IN COMMUNAL MOURNING - FOR THE 12,000 PEOPLE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED IN THE DISASTROUS SERIES OF EARTHQUAKES WHICH SHOOK THE AREA AT THE WEEKEND. TENS OF THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN LEFT HOMELESS, AND IRANIAN AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN FLYING IN MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND PERSONNEL TO AID THE THOUSANDS OF INJURED. THE SHAH AND EMPRESS FARAH YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WENT AMONG THE VICTIMS OF THE DISASTER, OFFERING COMFORT AND PROMISING SUPPORT.

WAILING WOMEN THREW THEMSELVES AT THE FEET OF THE SHAH AND EMPRESS WHEN THEY ARRIVED IN BIRJAND YESTERDAY. THE SHAH TOLD THEM: "EVERYTHING WILL BE ALL RIGHT.......LOOK AFTER YOUR CHILDREN AND WE WILL LOOK AFTER YOU......"
UNOFFICIAL FIGURES PUT THE DEATH TOLL AT 20,000, WITH 50,000 INJURED. MANY ARE STILL MISSING AND 100,000 ARE HOMELESS.

IN KAKHK, ONE OF THE WORST HIT TOWNS IN THE PROVINCE, RESCUE WORKERS YESTERDAY WERE STILL UNCOVERING BODIES AMONG THE WASTELAND OF RUBBLE LEFT FROM THE TREMORS. OF THE TOWN'S TOTAL POPULATION OF 7,000, SOME 5,000 ARE KNOWN TO BE DEAD. IRANIAN PRIME MINISTER AMIR ABBAS HOVEIDA IS IN THE AREA ORGANISING RELIEF OPERATIONS.

THE HOMELESS OF THE TOWN ARE SLEEPING IN THE STREETS AND OPEN SPACES, AND MAKESHIFT PREFABRICATED HOUSES HAVE BEEN SET UP FOR TREATMENT OF THE INJURED. THE TOWN RESEMBLES A BATTLEFIELD IN TIME OF WAR.

CASH AND RELIEF HAS CONTINUED TO POUR IN FOR THE VICTIMS FROM HOME AND ABROAD. ALL MILITARY PERSONNEL HAVE DONATED A DAY'S PAY.

TODAY (THURSDAY) HAS BEEN DECLARED A NATIONAL "DAY OF ASSISTANCE", ON THE ORDERS OF THE SHAH.
