Background: INTRODUCTION: The funeral of the slain Iraqi dissident leader, Dr. Jasim al-Mashehadani, was held in the Syrian capital, Damascus on Sunday (15 February). He had been assassinated eight days previously in Kuwait.

SYNOPSIS: The funeral procedures began in a Damascus mosque. Dr. Mashehadani was a member of the Iraqi National Liberation Front, which was formed last year in Syria, and has its base in Damascus. When he died, he had been travelling on a diplomatic passport, on a mission to co-ordinate opposition efforts against the regime of President Saddam Hussein. The National Liberation Front has been carrying out a campaign to unite all forces seeking to overthrow the regime.

Dr. Mashehadani's children were at the funeral. According to the Al Wahdah newspaper in Abu Dhabi, the Kuwaiti authorities, within two days of his death, arrested two men suspected of being involved in the assassination. At that time, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai Al Aam, warned that his killing carried echoes of events that led to the civil war in Lebanon. The Front is said to contain such elements as a communists, Ba'athists and a variety anti-government dissidents.
