Background: This is the world's first flying television station. It carries a 6 tons of broadcasting equipment and a 24-foot retractable antenna. Some grade school, high school and college students in Indiana and five other Midwest states will get classroom instruction from video tape programs, broadcast from the plane flying 23-thousand feet above North Central Indiana. The plane arrived recently at for-shrouded Purdue University Airport where it and a sister ship will be based during the program.

Monday through Thursday high-quality educational assistance to schools will be beamed from the "flying classroom", with nearly half a million students particularly in the beginning stages.

Purdue chief pilot Jerry Goldman and his crews will fly and maintain the planes.

An estimated 13 thousand schools and 5 million students lie within range of the powerful transmitters. We talked with Dr. John Ivey, President of the midwest program on airborne television instruction, soon after the plane was welcomed by officials and newsmen..(to SOF).

The facilities inside the plane, augmented by similar broadcasting and video tape-recording facilities at the University, including a master control panel, two video-tape recorders, two transmitters and a vidicon camera to transmit announcements and stations identification on the two ultra-high-frequency broadcast channels.

Schools in Indianapolis and Marion Country, Indiana, will participate in the early stages of the educational broadcasting experiment.
