Background: A total of 472 marchers were arrested Monday (14 June) when they marched on the Mississippi State Capitol at Jackson protesting a special session of the legislature.

The marchers charged that the special session of the legislature was illegally constituted. They said this was because members were chosen at elections from which Negro voters were largely excluded.

Halfway to the Capitol from the church where the march started, police halted the demonstrators. There was a verbal exchange between marchers and police over the marchers' lack of a parade permit. Then, the arrests began.

Most of the demonstrators filed into paddy wagons, but some went into a dirt side street, sat down and had to be carried to the wagons. The demonstrators rocked the vehicles and sang "freedom" songs. They were later housed in barn-like exhibit buildings at the State Fairgrounds and held in 100 dollars bail each.
