MAKARIOS: The person who was set up by the Greek junta as so-called President of the Republic of Cyprus, has resigned. Mr. Glafcos Clerides, President of the House Representatives, took over the function of acting as President during such time as I may be absent from Cyprus and until my return. His assumption of such duties is in accordance with Cyprus constitution as provided in the...and it is a step towards return to the constitutional order as provided in the recent resolution of the Security Council. I wish also to state that it was with much gratification that I received the news of the end of the Greek military regime, and that the former Prime Minister, Mr. Karamanlis, will form a political government in Greece.

Background: At a new conference in New York on Tuesday (23 July), the deposed President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, said he expected to return to Cyprus within the next few weeks. The conference was held shortly after the news had broken that Mr. Nicos Sampson had resigned as President of Cyprus, and that the Greek Military Junta had stepped down to be replaced by a civilian government.

Archbishop Makarios said that Mr. Glafces Clerides, who had taken over from Mr. Sampson, was only acting as an interim President on his behalf. The Archbishop also said he was gratified by the news of the end of military rule in Greece.

He said "The restoration of democracy in Greece gives me great satisfaction, even (thought) it was achieved with the sacrifice of the lives of so many Greeks in Cyprus. "He thought the change of Government in Greece would be a great help to the situation in Cyprus.

The Archbishop also welcomed the return to Athens of the former Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Constantine Karamanlis, and said he hoped that King Constantine would also return.
