Background: Lady Mountbatten and Indian Prime Minister, Nehru, were guests of honour at the official jubilee ceremony which marked the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Tata Iron and Steel Company at Jamshedpur, West Bengal.

The Tata company, already producing upwards of one million tons of steel per year, is being developed with the assistance of the Kaiser Engineering company of America, with a view to doubling its output.

The visitors inspected both the old and new sections of the steel mill which cover an area of ten square miles and employ 39,000 people. One of the management's greater problems is the growing influence of communism among the employees - despite the fact that the company has enlightened labour policies.
