    Background: World record-holder, Guy Drut of France, finished one-tenth of a second behind Cuban Alejandro Casanas in the 100-metre hurdles on Saturday night (15 May), giving the Cuban victory in 13.3 seconds at an international athletics meeting in Formia, Italy.

    But another world record-holder, Mac Wilkins of the United Stats, scored a convincing victory over Olympic discus champion, Ludvik Danek of Czechoslovakia. Wilkins won with a throw of 64.70 metres (212 ft 3 in). Danek came second at 62.14 metres (203 ft 10 1/2 in).

    Italian Pietro Mennea edged home a fifth of a second ahead of American Fred Newhouse over 300 metres to win in 32.3 seconds.

    Mannea is hoping to improve on his 1972 Olympic bronze medal time for the 200 metres in Montreal in July.
