Background: AT SOEST, IN WEST GERMANY, THE BRITISH ARMY TODAY (WEDNESDAY) REDEEMED A DEBT DATING BACK TO 1761. IT WAS INCURRED DURING THE SEVEN YEARS WAS WHEN FOOD AND FODDER HAD BECOME SHORT. BRITISH OFFICER OF THE 3RD DRAGOONS VISITED THIS FARM NEAR SOEST. HE OBTAINED "490 RATIONS OF GREEN FODDER" FOR HIS HORSES AND BEFORE LEAVING SIGNED A NOTE CERTIFYING THAT HE HAD TAKEN THE RATIONS.

LAST YEAR WHEN A PARTY OF SENIOR BRITISH AND CANADIAN OFFICERS WERE ENTERTAINED AT SOEST, A CITY COUNCILLOR, HERR BLUME, SHOWED THEM THE ORIGINAL RECEIPT FOR THE FORAGE, YELLOW AND FADED, BUT STILL CLEARLY LEGIBLE. IT WAS MADE OUT TO HERR BLUME, A DIRECT FOREBEAR OF THE CITY COUNCILLOR.

THE 3RD DRAGOONS AND THE 6TH DRAGOONS, WHO BOTH TOOK PART IN THE SEVEN YEARS WAR WERE LATER AMALGAMATED TO BECOME THE 3RD CARABINIERS, NOW AN ARMOURED UNIT STATIONED IN GERMANY.

TODAY THEY REDEEMED THE DEBT, 203 YEARS AFTER IT HAD BEEN INCURRED. THE UNIT'S COMMANDING OFFICER, LIEUTENANT COLONEL I. STAMFORD PRESENTED HERR BLUME WITH SOME PRINTS OF THE 3RD DRAGOONS IN ACTION AND AN ENGLISH GOLD SOVEREIGN.

THE DEBT REPAID, HERR BLUME GAVE LT. COL. STAMFORD A FACSIMILE COPY OF THE RECEIPT. HE IS KEEPING THE ORIGINAL ONE WHICH HAS BECOME A FAMILY HEIRLOOM.
