    THE TOURNAMENT OPENED ON FRIDAY (29 NOVEMBER) WITHOUT THE PARTICIPATION OF JAPANESE WORLD CUP GOLFERS MASASHI "JUMBO" OZAKI AND ISAO ACKI. THE JAPANESE TEAM ENDED THE DAY WITH 586 STROKES OVER THE 7,200 YARD (METRE) PAR 72 COURSE.

    BOTH SIDES WERE REPRESENTED BY NINE GOLFERS WITH THE BEST EIGHT SCORES COUNTING DAILY FOR THE TEAM TOTAL IN THE 54-HOLE, THREE-DAY TOURNAMENT.

    HUBERT GREEN OF THE UNITED STATES SCORED A FOUR-UNDER-PAR 68 TO TAKE THE FIRST ROUND LEAD IN INDIVIDUAL SCORING.

    HE WAS FOLLOWED BY TEAM-MATES BRIAN ALLIN WITH A 69 AND DAVE STOCKTON WITH 70. NAMIO TAKASU PLAYED A 71 FOR THE BEST INDIVIDUAL JAPANESE SCORE, WHICH PUT HIM IN FOURTH PLACE.

    TAKASU AND SHOZO MIYAMOTO, WHO HAD A 74, REPLACED OZAKI AND AOKI AT THE LAST MOMENT.
