Background: British civilians converged on the dusty Kermia range, near Nicosia, on Monday, Nov.10., to collect the guns promised them by Maj.Gen. Darling-- Director of Operations in Cyprus. In the last two weeks civilians, soft targets, have been the prey of EOKA terrorists. To enable the civilians to defend themselves Darling is issuing them will .38 revolvers.

Before they were given the guns, the civilians had to either prove their ability to use a revolver or take instructions from Army instructors. Life-size silhouettes were used as targets and many of the applicants proved themselves quite capable of using the weapons effectively.

Other measures to protect British lives include the dismissal of 3,000 Greek Cypriots employed by the British Army and the Royal Air Force. This is a result of bomb-planting in canteens and on the air bases by EOKA terrorists.

Volunteers from Britain are to replace the Greek Cypriots.
