TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 4: KYPRIANOU: "On my private visit to Athens, but I think that I will have the opportunity -- I hope I will have the opportunity to exchange some views with the Greek government and especially the Prime Minister Mr Karamanlis, on the further handling of the Cyprus problem. In view of recent developments, both internally in Cyprus and in view also of international developments regarding the Cyprus problem. This is necessary because when I return back to Cyprus we shall have to take certain decisions as to the next move we are going to take in an effort to break the deadlock."

Background: Cyprus President Spyros Kyprianou is in Greece for talks with Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis and other members of the Greek government.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Kyprianou arrived in Athens on Saturday (5 August) and was greeted by Greek Foreign Minister George Rallis. The meetings that will take place are the first since the United States lifted its arms embargo against Turkey, imposed in 1974 after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Last week the Cypriot government made its bitterness over the decision known to U.S. ambassador to Cyprus, Galen Stone.

Mr Kyprianou's visit is described as private -- after his meetings he will stay in Greece for a holiday as a guest of the government. Before leaving Cyprus the President attended services commemorating his predecessor, Archbishop Makarios, who died a year ago. He also addressed a memorial gathering in Nicosia. On his arrival in Athens Mr Kyprianou spoke about the purpose of his visit.
