    Background: Sudanese President Jaafar al-Nemeiry arrived in the French capital, Paris, on Wednesday (30 June) for important bilateral talks with French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

    SYNOPSIS: The talks were held at the Elysee Palace, got down to serious business President al-Nemeiry took the opportunity to inspect the palace guard-of-honour. He had just come from the United States, where he had held talks with U.S. leaders and the main purpose of his two-day French visit was to seek assistance for his country's six-year development plan. The Sudanese government is due to sign a multi-million dollar contract with a French engineering company for the construction of a Nile loop between Jonglei and Makalal in southern Sudan known as the Jonglei canal. After his talks with President Giscard d'Estaing, President al-Nemeiry told newsmen that the French government had agreed to play an increased role in developing Sudan, but he did not say to what extent aid would be given.
