In his statement - in French - M Nogrette said:

"It all happened very Fast. In three seconds I was on my hack in the van and there was a young man who was very rude and very menacing. Then I was gagged and it was most disagreeable - right down to my throat. I had sticking plaster all over, then they sat me down, put on handcuffs, tied my feat with a chain and put me in a trunk with a bag over my head.... that was the end.

QUESTION: Did they speak to you?

They told me something very conforming. At the moment I did not know at all what was going to happen - and they said to me: 'If you stay quiet, nothing will happen to you."

Background: Robert Nogretts the Renault car company official who was kidnapped by a Maoist "Commando Squad" on Wednesday, was released in Paris today (Friday) after 48 hours of living - as he described it -"with a pistol practically in my stomach".

The 63-year-old victim of the kidnappers said he had been hit, gagged, chained hand and foot, and put in a trunk after being seized. He was freed unharmed without the kidnappers getting satisfaction of any of their demands for the release of from prison of fellow Maoists, and for the reinstatement of Rencult workers sacked following a demonstration last month when a young Maois was shot dead by a Renault security guard.
