The President of South Yemen, Abdul-Fattah Ismail, has arrived in Addis Ababa for talks with the Ethiopian Head of State, Mengistu Haile-Mariam. Officials said Mr. Ismail's visit was part of periodic consultations between the two leaders to promote friendship and co-operation.

SYNOPSIS: The South Yemen President arrived in Ethiopia on Tuesday (1 May) to be met by Lieutenant-Colonel Mengistu and members of the ruling Provisional Military Administrative Council (PMAC). The two leader were due to discuss the Middle East peace treaty between Egypt and Israel and other international issues.

At Bole airport, Mr. Ismail was given a hero's welcome as the national anthems of the two countries were played. He said his arrival -- on May Day -- emphasised South Yemen's solidarity with "revolutionary" Ethiopia and her people's "struggle for social progress". After centuries of fighting, Mr. Ismail said, the people of Ethiopia had finally been able to discard "the chains of authority and dictatorial oppression". Ethiopians were determined to continue until their revolutionary aims were achieved.

After the airport ceremonies, Colonel Mengistu and his guest made their way to the National palace in Addis ababa by car. Thousands of cheering Ethiopians lined the route. In a statement, Mr. Ismail said Colonel Mengistu's efforts to develop the Ethiopian economy and to raise living standards were a useful example to the Yemen Socialist Party.
