Background: FRANCE'S MAJORITY POLITICAL PARTY, THE GAULLISTS, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) HAD ITS NAME CHANGED TO UNION OF DEMOCRATS FOR THE FIFTH REPUBLIC.

THE CHANGE ANNOUNCED AT A THREE-DAY CONFERENCE OF THE PARTY AT LILLE, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S BIRTHPLACE.

THE CONFERENCE WAS ADDRESSED BY THE FRENCH PRIME MINISTER, M. POMPIDOU. HE SAID THE AIM OF THE CHANGE WAS TO ATTRACT MORE PEOPLE TO THE GAULLISTS, PARTICULARLY THE YOUNG, TO COUNTER-ACT THE GROWING STRENGTH OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY. THE PARTY HAS ALSO ALTERED ITS IMAGE, AND ACCEPTED THE PRINCIPLE OF DUAL POLITICAL MEMBERSHIP, SAYING GAULLISM IS COMPATIBLE WITH MEMBERSHIP OF ANOTHER POLITICAL PARTY, BUT NOT THE COMMUNIST PARTY.
