Background: ROY EMERSON, THE AUSTRALIAN NUMBER ONE SEED, TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BEAT NIKKI PILIC OF YUGOSLAVIA, ON THE CENTRE COURT AT WIMBLEDON IN FOUR SETS: 6-3 11-9 3-6 6-4.

THE MATCH WAS NO EASY TASK FOR THE FRONT RANKED AUSTRALIAN AGAINST THE TALLY YUGOSLAV WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM A STIFF NECK THAT DELAYED THE CONTEST AN HOUR.

IT WAS A TIGHT AND EXCITING MATCH. PILIC, WITH HIS SERVICE REDUCED TO THREE-QUARTER SPEED, HELD HIS OWN IN THE FIRST SET BEFORE EMERSON BROKE THROUGH IN THE FOURTH GAME TO SETTLE THE OUTCOME OF THEIR INITIAL CLASH. THE SECOND SET WENT TO 18 GAMES BEFORE THE YUGOSLAV'S STRENGTH WAS AGAIN ASSAILED. WHILE EMERSON MOVED WELL ROUND THE COURT, PILIC RETAINED THE MASTERY OF TOUCH. IN THE 10TH GAME, EMERSON GOT THE DECISIVE BREAK OF SERVICE, BUT PILIC WAS NOT TO SUBMIT EASILY.

IT WAS PILIC WHO GAINED THE ONLY BREAK OF SERVICE IN THE THIRD SET. IT CAME WHEN EMERSON SIGNALLED SOME WEARINESS WITH A DOUBLE FAULT.

THEN, IN THE TENTH GAME OF THE FOURTH SET, CAME THE FOURTH SERVICE BREAK OF THE ENTIRE MATCH. THIS WAS EMERSON'S, AND SO, RATHER SHAKEN FOR A TOP SEED IN AN EARLY ROUND, HE MOVED TO JOINT THE 32 MEN LEFT IN THE SINGLES TITLE.

PRINCESS MARINA WATCHED THE MATCH FROM THE ROYAL BOX, AND SOME OTHER DISTINGUISHED GUESTS WERE THE TOURING AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TEAM.
