Background: A YOUNG BUDDHIST MONK IMMOLATED HIMSELF OUTSIDE THE VIEN HOA DAO PAGODA IN SAIGON TODAY (MONDAY) - THE FOURTH SUICIDE BY FIRE DURING THE PAST TWO DAYS IN PROTEST AGAINST THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER KY. THIS FOLLOWED MASSIVE BUDDHIST DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL YESTERDAY.

THE PROCESSION WHICH RANGED THROUGH THE STREETS OF SAIGON COMPRISED BUDDHIST MONKS AND UNIFORMED, STAVE-CARRYING BOYS AND GIRLS OF THE BUDDHIST YOUTH MOVEMENT.

IT WAS THE LARGEST DEMONSTRATION TO DATE IN THE CURRENT SERIES, WITH MORE AND MORE MONKS AND NUNS TAKING A DOMINANT PART. TROOPS USED TEAR-GAS AND WATER TO TRY TO BREAK UP THE MARCHERS, WHO EVENTUALLY STAGED A SIT-DOWN IN FRONT OF THE BARBED WIRE BARRICADES.
