Background: In Monte Carlo today (Sunday), Austrian driver Jochen Rindt, in a Lotus, became the winner of the 28th Monaco Formula One Grand Prix - overtaking Australian Jack Brabham in the last bend of the twisting 80-lap race.
World Champion Jackie Stewart, driving a British March, took the lead from the start of the race - but was forced into the pits with a broken rotor arm in the 26th lap, where he lost three laps and never regained a leading position. It was bare that Jack Brabham took the lead, in his own Brabham car.
The twisting 1.9-mile (3.14-kilometre) track claimed several big names in the first half of the gruelling race-among them, Belgium's Jacky Ickx, Britain's John Surtees and Piers Courage, France's Jean-Pierre Beltoise and New Zealander Bruce McClaren.
At the three-quarter mark, the order was Brabham, Rindt, Pescarolo, Siffert, Hulme and Hill.
With ten laps to go there were 14 seconds between Brabham and now second-placed Rindt-and Brabham seemed almost certain of victory. But the Austrian put on one of the most furious chases ever seen to Monaco-knocking five seconds off Brabham's lead in the six laps, four more seconds in the 77th lap and, when they crossed the last lap-line, he was only one-and-a-half seconds behind. Then, as Brabham appeared first out of the tunnel under the Pigeon Shoot, he seemed still in control of his position but, inexplicably, he failed to get round the last bend-known as the Gasworks Hairpin - only 200 yards (metres) from the end, and Rindt flashed past to win.
Brabham, who said his wheels had locked after breaking suddenly when he was hampered by a car which was lapping ahead of him, managed to extricate himself and still come in second, followed by France's Henri Pescarolo.
