Background: The signing of a friendship agreement between Mali and Gambia was the highlight of a visit by the President of Mali, Colonel Moussa Traore, to Gambia. Colonel Traore was a guest of the Gambian government, which had organised celebrations to mark Gambia's eleventh anniversary of independence.
Each year the Gambians invite the head of a different neighbouring state as guest of honour at their independence celebrations. Last year it was President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania.
Gambian President, Sir Dawda K. Jawara, visited Mali last year.
The two Presidents signed the new friendship agreement reviewing an independence anniversary day parade that include units of the armed forces and youth organisations.
