Background: A group of about 150 israeli youths staged a peaceful demonstration outside the Austrian Embassy in Tel-Aviv on Sunday night (30 September). They were protesting the Austrian government's decision to close a jewish-run camp in Vienna for Soviet Jews on their way to Israel. The move to close the transit camp came on Saturday (29 September) as part of a deal between the Austrian Government and Arab guerrillas to secure the release of the three Soviet Jews the latter were holding hostage in Vienna.

Although the original Austrian announcement said facilities would be withdrawn for accommodation of Soviet Jews at the Jewish Agency's Transit Centre at Schoenau near Vienna, Austrian Government officials stressed on Monday (1 October) that the Government was, in fact, legally powerless to actually close the camp.

The only incident in the demonstration, organised by the Bar-Ilan University and the youth section of the right-wing Likud opposition party, came when an egg was thrown at an Embassy sign. Although police led away one egg-carrying demonstrator, there were no arrests.

a small group of police had ??? off the Embassy before the demonstration. The demonstrators later dispersal, when they were told they would not be allowed to march with their banners.

Before they dispersed, the demonstrators were addressed by the Secretary of the Likud youth section, Mr. Ronnie Milikovaky. He told the crowd the demonstration was not political, but he said it was necessary to demonstrate against the Austrian action.

Earlier in the day the Austrian Ambassador called in at the Israeli Foreign Ministry, where she was given a copy of the Israeli Government communique condemning the Austrian Government's action.

According to news agency reports, more demonstrations are planned.

SYNOPSIS: About one hundred and fifty youths demonstrated outside the Austrian Embassy in Tel-Aviv on Sunday night. They were protesting against the Austrian Government's decision to close down a transit camp for Soviet Jews just outside Vienna. The Austrian move came after Arab guerrillas kidnapped three Soviet Jews in Austria on Friday. The promise to close the camps secured the Jews' release.

The demonstrators carried banners saying "shame on Austria", and "Austria destroyed the Jews before - will she prevent their rescue?" The police, who had given permission for the demonstration, later dispersed the crowd, forbidding them to march with the banners. The demonstration was organised by he Bar-Ilan University and the youth section of the right-wing liked opposition party.

Although it was a peaceful demonstration, one protestor threw an egg at an Embassy sign. Police led one egg-carrying youth away, but later stated that no arrests had been made. Further demonstrations in Israel are expected.
