Background: Princess Grace of Monaco, accompanied by Prince Rainier, launched a revolutionary type of sea exploration boat at Nice, France, Dec 10. Named "Amphitrite", it will be able to carry a "diving saucer" for underwater research.
As it had to be taken to Nice by road, it posed a number of traffic problems in Nice itself: the only way to get it under a railway bridge was to place it on rubber rollers and push it through! A police helicopter hovered above the port to make sure it was guided safely into place.
After naming the ship with champagne, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace examined the 25-ton vessel, owned by the Office of Underwater Research. It is intended to help in the underwater explorations of Captain Cousteau, curator of the famous oceanography museum at Monte Carlo. Captain Cousteau was there to greet the royal pair.
Little is known about this experimental boat's capabilities, except that it can take a "diving saucer" to a given place and later recover it. To save having to go by sea, it can if necessary be folded and transported by air. The superstructure will stand only three metres high and the light girders can be taken down. Its engine will be of the "outboard" type.
The boat is light, speedy and will be relatively easy to handle.
