    Fifty-six thousand fans crowded Liverpool's Anfield football ground on Monday to watch Liverpool defeat Leeds United. The victory virtually assures Liverpool the League first division championship. Liverpool started attacking early in the game.



    Leeds had three good chances in the space of a few minutes. Lorimer shot this one wide.



    Seconds later Lorimer tried again - bringing a good save from the Leeds goalkeeper.



    Jordan tries for Leeds this time - but again it's saved.



    Into the second half and still no score. From a corner Liverpool started a determined attack. Keegan headed the ball to give Cormack the chance to score in the forty-seventh minute.



    With the score at one nil, and the League championship virtually assured, Liverpool seemed determined to increase their advantage. Just before full time the Leeds defence crumbled. The way was left open for Kevin Keegan to score Liverpool's second goal. The final score was Liverpool two, Leeds, nil.



    Meanwhile, at Manchester,s Old Trafford, veteran Manchester United team captain, Bobby Charlton, was about to play his last home game for the club. It was to be Charlton's last game in Manchester after a career spanning twenty years with the club. The veteral player received a silver salver from the club chairman before going on to play against Sheffield United. It was Charlton's six hundred and third league match for his old club.

    Leeds lost many early opportunities in the match. Three good chances were lost within the space of a few minutes, Leeds players Lorimer and Jordan being unlucky with several shots at the Liverpool goal.

    During the second half Liverpool scored the first goal after 47 minutes of play. It was Cormack taking up an opportunity provided by Keegan, who scored. Keegan scored the second Liverpool goal just before full time.

    Meanwhile at Old Trafford, in Manchester, veteran Manchester United soccer star Bobby Charlton received a silver salver from the club Chairman Louis Edwards. Charlton played for Manchester United for 20 years, playing more than 600 league matches. Monday's game, against Sheffield United, was Charlton's last home game for his old club. 57,000 fans turned up to see Charlton's team crushed by 3 goals to nil.
