Background: TEMPORARY REPAIRS TO THE AUSTRALIAN AIRCRAFT CARRIER MELBOURNE ARE NEARING COMPLETION IN SINGAPORE. HER GASHED BOW HAS BEEN WELDED BACK INTO SHAPE AND HOLES IN HER SUPERSTRUCTURE PATCHED UP. SHE IS EXPECTED TO SAIL FOR SYDNEY AT THE END OF NEXT WEEK.

THE MELBOURNE WAS DAMAGED IN A COLLISION WITH THE U.S. DESTROYER FRANK E. EVANS IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA ON JUNE 3. ONE SECTION OF THE AMERICAN WARSHIP SANK AND 74 MEN WERE LOST.

THE CARRIER IS NOW OUT OF DRY DOCK AND TIED UP AT A WHARF. LOCAL WORKMEN HAVING BEEN WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO GET HER BOW AND FLIGHT DECK BACK INTO SEA SHAPE, WHILE THE CREW HAS BEEN BUSY GIVING THE SHIP A FRESH COAT OF PAINT TO HIDE THE SCARS.

AN AUSTRALIAN NAVY SPOKESMAN SAID THE MELBOURNE SHOULD LOCK 'PRETTY NORMAL' BY THE TIME SHE REACHES SYDNEY, WHERE SHE WILL BE FITTED WITH A NEW BOW AND UNDERGO OTHER PERMANENT REPAIRS.
