Background: Seen in training at Cologne Airfield Oct 7 were the first 'Starfighter' jet planes for the West German Air Force. The 'Starfighter' holds the speed and altitude record for jet fighters and is able to carry an atomic bomb.

In March this year, substantial aid for the reviving West German aircraft industry was guaranteed by an agreement signed between the Federal Republic, Belgium and Holland near Bonn for the joint manufacture on licence of the Lockheed F-104G 'Starfighters.'
Resulting from the initiative of West German Defence Minister Strauss, the joint programme followed the decision of the Netherlands and Belgian Governments to adopt the plane. West Germany alone was to build 570 'Starfighters' on licence for the "Luftwaffe".
