Background: Travel across the border bridges and roads between Rhodesia and Zambia remained impossible despite the decision on Sunday (4 February) by the Salisbury regime to reopen the frontier.

Rhodesian customs and immigration officials reported for duty as normal after the decision to end the blockade imposed on Zambia 23 days before.

But across the Zambesi river, the Zambian posts remained closed...and troops turned back vehicles which tried to enter the country from Rhodesia.

Salisbury originally closed the border after accusing the Zambians of harbouring African guerrillas who have been active in the area. Zambia retaliated by closing its side.

The decision to reopen the border followed a complaint by Zambia to the United Nations, and criticism from many countries of the earlier Rhodesian embargo.
