Background: Nations throughout the world reverberated with the news of the death of the Chinese Leader, Chairman Mao Tse-Tung. But perhaps the countries most immediately affected were those of South East Asia. Living on the doorstep of China and containing large Chinese populations the announcement of the Chairman's death created a wave of concern.

In Bangkok, as in other Asian cities, newspapers sold out as people who have lived under the indirect...but vast...influence of Chairman Mao rushed to confirm the news they had just heard. For a quarter of a century Mao's word had affected their lives.

But unlike most other Asian countries the Thai Government did not officially fly the national flag at half mast.

However, at the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok, the flag was lowered as soon as the official announcement was made. Thai government officials visited the Embassy throughout the day to pass on their condolences upon the death of the Chinese leader.

Many Thais also visited the Embassy on a private basis to pay their respects to the late Mao Tse-Tung. Man of them.....like this couple.....arrived in mourning clothes and laid wreaths at the foot of the Portrait of the Chinese leader.
