    Background: Over 250,000 people celebrated the 63rd National Day anniversary by pledging their allegiance to the Nationalist Chinese government on Taiwan.

    In a declaration, read by a student representative at huge rally in Taipei on Thursday (10 October), the National Chinese living in Taiwan vowed to destroy Communist rule on the Chinese mainland (the People's Republic of China) under the leadship of Taiwanese President Chiang Kai-???k.

    The 86-year-old louder, ??? been ailing since August 1972, failed to make his traditional appearance at the balcony of the Presidential Nansion to receive the crowd's cheers.

    But in a message delivered on the eve of the "Double Tenth" celebrations (Wednesday 9 October), President C???iang called on the people to contribute their utmost for the recovery of the Chinese mainland which the Nations lists lost to the Communists 25 years ago.

    Thursday's rally at the Presidential Plaza was presided over by the Speaker of the Taiwan ??? Parliament, Mr. Nich Wen-yo.

    Prime Minister Chiang Ching-Kuo, the President's when, was also resent at the rally.

    12,000 people took part in the parade which ended with the release of thousands of multi-coloured balloons and 10,000 pigeons amid cheers of "Long Live President Chiang."
