Background: In Turkey the new education term has started and students have been returning to universities and colleges in Istanbul that have been closed since mass demonstrations last month. The demonstrations had protested against the increasing number of terrorist attacks in Turkey during the past year.
SYNOPSIS: On Wednesday (15 November) as students started returning to the Istanbul University all was quiet. University and Police authorities had been expecting the beginning of a new wave of demonstrations. Just last month large contingents of armed troops and police turned out for a mass demonstrations at the funeral of a university professor who was gunned down as he left his home. Soldiers were on duty to keep a watchful eye on the university grounds.
Students were faced with strict security checks as they entered the Istanbul University. More than 500 people have been killed so far this year in the terrorist attacks whose victims have ranged from the left and right-wing extremists to professors and policemen.
