Background: Fencing -- and Sweden scored a comfortable victory over Switzerland to win the men's team epee gold medal in the last event of the world championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday (24 July).

SYNOPSIS: Although Sweden have won the title in the past four world championships, they were taking no chances as they prepared for their encounter against the Swiss.

Despite a shaky start and conceding a 4-2 lead to their opponents, they recovered their composure to beat Switzerland 9-4.

Sweden's Leif Hogstrom, seen here on the right, did much to restore his team's morale by beating Christian Kauter.

Hans Jacobson took over from where Hogstrom left off and consolidated Sweden's lead by getting the better of Daniel Gieger, seen here on the left. Jacobson showed remarkable control and balance of arms, body and weapon to win this keenly contested bout.

Sweden's winning streak continued when Johan Harmenberg took on Patrice Gaille, seen he here on the left. Twenty-three-year-old Harmenberg had won the individual epee gold medal a week previously, and he ended the championships with two victories and two defeats. The entire Swedish team was in top form. Their team trainer Bela Rarrich, from Hungary, said afterwards that the Swiss seemed tired in the final. But they had been hardest of all their opponents.

Earlier, Sweden knocked out West Germany 9-2 and then beat the Soviet Union 8-2 for the right to meet Switzerland in the final. And the Swiss had started the day by beating France 9-4 in the eliminatory rounds, and then had an exhausting match with Hungry which they won 8-7 after more than two hours of fencing. This was the 33rd world championship and lasted nine days.
