Jeff Simon of NBC News has been investigating.

TRANSCRIPT: SIMON: "Skateboards are everywhere you look these days -- all kinds of them. Red ones, blue ones, wooden ones, plastic ones -- and now a young San Francisco aircraft mechanic has designed a motorised skateboard Mike Nader (Phon:) calls his innovation a power slalom board. It uses a one horse power motor from a hedge trimmer and depending how its geared can travel up to 30 miles per hour. He's ridden it all over San Francisco and even across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito.

"What kind of reactions have you got?"

DESIGNER: "Well, I've caused a few near-head-on collisions and people usually ask me whether I've built it myself and...."

SIMON: "Does this go up hills in San Francisco?"

DESIGNER: "Yes it does, it goes up hills really well."

SIMON: "Mike Nader plans to manufacture his power slalom boards and sell them for 195 dollars apiece. He's confident they'll be popular. And why shouldn't they? In addition to allowing you to do handstands while going up hill the motorised skateboard...delivers 160 miles to the gallon, with minimum pollution. It handles beautifully in traffic, it's great for getting in and out of tight squeezes and as for parking -- that's no problem at all. Jeff Simon reporting from San Francisco."
