Background: Princess Paola, wife of Prince Albert of Liege, visited the coal face of a colliery at Montegne, near Liege, Belgium, Mar 23. She wore a distinctly non-regal "ensemble" of miner's helmet, overalls and heavy boots.
In addition, the 24-year-old Princess carried a miner's lamp. She was greeted on her arrival by Mr. Paquot, manager of the mines of Montegne and President of the Belgian Federation of Coalmines. Then, a cage ride 750 metres underground.
The Princess is President-of-Honour of the National Institution for Help to Italian Workers in Belgium. Most of the Italian miners in Belgium are employed in this district.
