Background: Panamanian Ernesto Marcel won the World Boxing Association world featherweight title in Maracay, Venezuela, on Saturday (August 19) when he beat Antonio Gomez of Venezuela on points over 15 rounds. The fight was Gomez' second defence of the title he won from Shojo Saijo of Japan in Tokyo last September with a seventh round knockout.

In Saturday's fight two of the judges made Marcel the winner, and the third made it a draw. From the start, Marcel was constantly on the attack, and fight commentators said Gomez appeared listless, with no effective hitting power.
