Background: An impressive last tribute to King Paul of Greece, who died last Friday... Thousands of his people, having queued for hours in the bitter night cold, entered Athens Cathedral last night (Monday) to pay their final homage as his body lay in state.
A golden crown was placed at the head of the coffin, which was covered with the Greek flag. And spread around, on crimson velvet cushions, were the late king's decorations. In front stood the Icon of the Holy Virgin, brought from the island of Tinos to the bedside of the dying monarch.
By tonight (Tuesday) an estimated 20,000 Greeks had filed silently by. A solemn requiem mass was held in the presence of young King Constantine, his family and Government Ministers. The late king's body will lie in state until funeral on Thursday.
