Background: QUINTUPLETS - FOUR BOYS AND A GIRL -- WERE BORN TO A 32 YEAR-OLD AFRICAN WOMAN A FEW DAYS AGO (FRIDAY 13TH). THE QUINS WERE BORN NORMALLY IN THE REGIONAL HOSPITAL AT ZAVALA, ABOUT 200 MILES (320 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF THE MOZAMBIQUE CAPITAL.

DR. JULIO FERNANDES WHO ASSISTED AT THE DELIVERY, SAID THE QUINS SHOWED EVERY SIGN THAT THEY WOULD SURVIVE, BUT AS A PRECAUTION THEY WERE MOVED BY AMBULANCE TO THIS HOSPITAL IN LOURENCO MARQUES.

WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN TOOK THESE PICTURES THE QUINS WERE FIVE DAYS OLD. THEIR WEIGHTS AT BIRTH WERE GIVEN AS: FIST BOY: 2LB 12OZ. (1.250 GRAMS); SECOND BOY: WEIGHT UNKNOWN; GIRL: 3 LBS 4OZ (1350 GRAMS);THIRD BOY: 3 LBS 5 oz (1500 GRAMS); AND THE FOURTH BOY: 3LBS 2OZ (1425 GRAMS). THE WEIGHT OF THE SECOND BOY IS UNKNOWN SINCE THE PAPER NOTATION TIED TO THE BOY'S ARM WAS LOST.

THE PARENTS, MR. FELISBERTO MUTANGUA AND HIS WIFE, CLARA, NOW HAVE THE PROBLEM OF FEEDING FIVE EXTRA MOUTHS. THEY ALREADY HAVE FIVE CHILDREN, INCLUDING A SET OF TWINS.

THEY'RE POOR FAMILY, BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE NO DIFFICULTY IN PROVIDING FOR THE QUINS SINCE A LARGE MOVEMENT HAS STARTED IN MOZAMBIQUE TO PROVIDE FUNDS FOR THE CHILDREN'S FUTURE.

(YESTERDAY (MONDAY) A FRENCH WOMAN GAVE BIRTH TO QUINS IN PARIS, THE FIRST KNOWN QUINS EVER TO BE BORN IN FRANCE. ALTHOUGH GIVEN ONLY A 20 PER CENT CHANCE OF SURVIVAL THEY ARE STILL ALIVE TODAY WITH THE DOCTORS REPORTING THAT THE YOUNGEST IS GIVING CAUSE FOR ANXIETY. THE PARIS QUINS WERE NOT AS HEAVY AS THOSE IN MOZAMBIQUE, AND WERE BORN MORE THAN TWO MONTHS PREMATURE.)
MEDICAL EXPERTS ESTIMATE THAT ONE SET OF QUINTUPLETS IS BORN IN EVERY 54 MILLION BIRTHS.
