    THE TWO MILITARY LEADERS RAN WELL AHEAD OF THEIR OPPONENTS AS THE RETURNS FLOWED IN, AND THEIR NEAREST OPPONENT, "PEACE" CANDIDATE, LAWYER TRUONG DINH DZU, CONCEDED DEFEAT.

    FORMER PREMIER TAN VAN HUONG AND FORMER HEAD OF STATE PHAN KHAC SUU TWO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES SEEN AS GENERAL THIEU'S MAIN RIVAL BEFORE THE VOTE, WERE RUNNING THIRD AND FOURTH, WITH 8.4 AND 8.3 PER CENT OF THE VOTE RESPECTIVELY.

    SAIGON ITSELF WENT BY NARROW MARGIN TO MR. HUONG WHILE MR. SUU WOH THE NORTH-EASTERN CITY OF DAMAGE ELSEWHERE MR. SUU'S SHOWING WAS MUCH LESS FAVOURABLE THAN HAD BEEN EXPECTED.

    THE VOTING WAS WATCHED BY OBSERVER FROM OVER 30 NATIONS, INCLUDING THE UNITED STATES.

    POLLING DAY WAS MARRED BY VIETCONG ATTACKS WHICH RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF 28 PEOPLE. IN ALL, THERE WERE 73 INCIDENTS OF VIETCONG MORTAR AND GRENADE ATTACKS.

    LATEST FIGURES SHOWED GENERAL THIEU AND AIR VICE-MARSHAL KY WITH 35.8 PER CENT OF THE VOTE AND MR. DZU, WHO HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN A STRONG CHANGE IN THE VOTE, POLLING AND ESTIMATED 20.3 PER CENT.

    THE TWO LEADERS HAD 586, 364 VOTES FROM 27 PROVINCES AND CITIES IN SOUTH VIETNAM. MR. DZU, AGED 50, HAD COLLECTED 332,845 VOTES WITH JUST OVER HALF THE RESULTS IN.

    RESULTS OF THE VOTE ARE SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION BY THE PROVINCIAL NATIONAL ASSEMBLY WHICH WILL ALSO EXAMINE ANY CANDIDATES' COMPLAINTS OF IRREGULARITIES.

    ALTOGETHER 83.1 PER CENT OF SOUTH VIETNAM'S REGISTERED VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). A HIGHER PER CENTAGE THAN VOTED LAST SEPTEMBER IN ELECTIONS FOR A CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY.
