Background: SELBY, U.K. VARIOUS LOCATIONS, CALIFORNIA AND COLORADO, USA, ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND

Severe weather is affecting much of the northern hemisphere. At least 22 people have died in one of California's worst ever storms, while in the Yorkshire town of Selby in England a major flooding disaster was only just avoided. Bad weather also resulted in the Swiss alpine resort of Zermatt being cut off by unusually heavy snowfalls. Residents were evacuated by helicopter on Wednesday (6 January) Widespread flooding in northern England threatened to engulf the town of Selby, downstream from York on the swollen river Ouse. However, a severe frost helped lower water levels and save the ancient abbey town from greater damage. The people of California in the United States were less fortunate as the storm, which began on Sunday (3 January), caused flooding and large-scale mudslides. The San Francisco area was particularly badly hit, with the famous Golden Gate bridge closed for a time when the main highway north was covered by tons (tonnes) of mud. Storm damage in the State was estimated at 100 million US dollars. Heavy snow also closed roads near Denver, Colorado.
